Yemen: Southern Separatists Plan Referendum on Independence

The internationally recognized government of Yemen, backed by Saudi Arabia, has launched a military operation against Southern separatists, supported by the United Arab Emirates, in the Hadramaut province. The operation aims to regain control of the 'Shield of the Homeland' force after areas were seized by the Southern Transitional Council (STC). The separatists plan to hold a referendum on the independence of South Yemen within two years and are calling for international community support for talks. The operation has been marked by airstrikes and reports of casualties on both sides. The United Arab Emirates stated that it is approaching the escalation with restraint and is committed to de-escalation, while confirming the withdrawal of its forces from Yemen.
