EU Single Market for Medicines: Lower Prices, Greater Access

MEP Michalis Hadjipantelas presents a proposal for the creation of a single market for medicines in Europe, aiming to reduce prices, increase availability, and ensure equal access to expensive treatments. The proposal involves the participation of at least five member states in joint procurement, setting rules for quantities and preventing parallel negotiations. Emphasis is placed on “critical” medicines, such as antibiotics, insulin, and vaccines, due to their importance for public health. The mechanism will operate with transparency and oversight, ensuring patient safety and addressing problems such as drug shortages and monopolies.
