Rare Lizard Not Seen for 150 Years Rediscovered in Peru

After 150 years, an international team of herpetologists rediscovered the lizard Anolis laevis in the mountainous forests of the San Martin region of Peru. This species, originally discovered in 1876, is distinguished by an additional snout in males, a characteristic that evolved independently in other species in Brazil and Ecuador. The discovery was made by researchers from various institutions and is described in a study published in the journal Zootaxa. Despite the discovery, Anolis laevis is considered critically endangered due to the destruction of its habitat by deforestation and agricultural activity, with scientists proposing its classification as 'endangered' by the IUCN.
