No Role for Attorney General in Revised Wiretapping Proposal for CYPA

The revised proposal of the Ministry of Justice for the amendment of Article 17 of the Constitution regarding the lifting of communication privacy will not include a role for the Attorney General. The discussion in the Legal Committee focused on utilizing the existing three-member committee, which will be informed within 72 hours of surveillance decisions by the CYPA director. Additionally, it is proposed that judicial approval be required before the police monitor the communications of suspects. The discussion will continue on March 27 with the aim of finalizing the text and promoting it to the Plenary Session on April 2. MPs emphasized the need to limit powers and avoid extending them to the Attorney General.
