Police Unions Battle Over New Work Schedule in Cyprus - Protests Planned

Police unions in Cyprus are strongly reacting to changes in their work schedules, which came into effect at the beginning of the year. They believe the new regulation deprives them of recovery and rest time, significantly reducing their days off. The unions accuse the police of arbitrariness and institutional deviation. The Pan-Cypriot Union ISOTITA is calling on its members to participate massively in a protest event to be held outside the House of Representatives, while also submitting a memorandum to Parliament, expressing the view that the changes to the schedule are illegal as they violate the Police Law. The discussion on the issue is moving to the Parliamentary Legal Committee today, where strong disagreements from police representatives are expected. The Chief of Police, Themistos Arnautis, has also been invited to the session to answer the criticisms. The focus is on the positions that the parliamentary parties will adopt and whether they will support the police unions, calling for a return to the previous system.
