Interior Minister: Reunification of Cyprus Remains Top Priority

Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, stated that the liberation and reunification of Cyprus remains the top priority for the Greek Cypriot side. He spoke during a memorial speech at the annual commemoration of EOKA hero, Markos Drakos, in Nicosia. The Minister emphasized the sacrifice of Markos Drakos and his contribution to the struggle for freedom, reminding that freedom is not guaranteed and requires effort. He pointed out that the Cyprus issue remains an 'open wound' for the country and its people, 51 years after the invasion. Mr. Ioannou mentioned that the President of the Republic is working based on the resolutions of the United Nations and the principles of the European Union, with the aim of resuming negotiations from the point where they were interrupted in Crans-Montana in 2017. He explained that the actions of the Greek Cypriot side have led to the activation of the international community and the EU. In closing, the Minister of Interior stressed that despite the difficulties, our side will continue persistently for a functional and viable solution, which will guarantee the rights and freedoms of all Cypriots and create conditions of peace and security.
