2025 Review: From Ukraine and Gaza to the New Global Geopolitical Order

2025 was marked by ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as escalating violence in Syria and Sudan. Simultaneously, the assumption of the US Presidency by Donald Trump triggered changes in geopolitical balances and the global economy. The year concluded with intense efforts, mediated by Trump, to achieve a peaceful settlement in Ukraine and Gaza. The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) review records the most significant events of 2025. In January, Tomiko Itooka, the world's oldest woman, passed away, while Donald Trump left open the possibility of military action against Greenland and Panama and threatened Canada with economic sanctions. An earthquake struck Tibet, causing over 126 deaths. On the Middle East front, an agreement was reached for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, which however faced difficulties in its implementation. Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States and immediately proceeded to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change and the World Health Organization. In February, armed clashes occurred in Syria and landslides in Santorini due to seismic activity. Moldova denounced a violation of its airspace by a drone, while January 2025 was revealed as the warmest January ever recorded.
