518 Applications for Only 21 Turkish Cypriot Properties

More than 500 applications (518) were submitted for only 21 Turkish Cypriot properties announced in October, demonstrating the severity of the housing problem in Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriot Property Management Service reports that interest in commercial properties was also high, with 226 applications for 33 available properties. The new process for the allocation and management of Turkish Cypriot properties, which came into effect in October, is considered more objective as it is based on measurable criteria and scoring. However, issues are emerging that need to be resolved, such as the need for a comprehensive reform of the management framework, and the effective recording, recovery and utilization of vacant properties. In the next phase, properties of high commercial and business value, such as in Mackenzie and Phinikoudes in Larnaca, will be allocated through competitive bidding. Already, 130 plots have been included in the Special Management Areas (SMA), with bidders expected to be notified in February. In addition, rent payment will be possible through the website of the Turkish Cypriot Property Management Service within January, thus facilitating tenants and improving the efficiency of the service.
