A Divided Cyprus Presides over the EU – Zelensky's Visit Highlights Tensions

Cyprus officially assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first half of 2026, with the official ceremony overshadowed by the presence and agenda of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky sought to leverage the Cypriot Presidency to push for the opening of Ukraine's EU accession negotiation chapters and to accelerate European funding. He also called for the strengthening of sanctions against Russia. Zelensky's language, referring to Cyprus as a “divided country” without mentioning the Turkish invasion, raised eyebrows and drew comparisons with the rhetoric Ukraine uses regarding its own territorial integrity. President Christodoulides, for his part, reminded that Cyprus has been experiencing the consequences of the “illegal invasion and occupation”, but this divergence highlighted the limits of international solidarity.
