A Failed Poetic Pirouette by G. Frangos

The Patriarch comments on a recent post by the president of the Union of Journalists, Giorgos Frangos, on social media, which he describes as a failed poetic attempt. Frangos had addressed those who expressed satisfaction with the presence of Greek frigates and fighter jets in Cyprus, describing their euphoria as “empty and cloud-walking.” The Patriarch states that he belongs to the “little Greeks” that Frangos refers to and feels comfortable with that, as he believes that Greece is a natural and strategic support for Cyprus. He emphasizes that the presence of Greek forces is deterrent and is linked to the protection of European territory and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Patriarch argues that deterrence is not arson, but elementary common sense defense, and that weakness and lack of power do not bring peace. He also points out that peace is ensured by a balance of power, alliances and a clear choice of camp. Finally, the Patriarch acknowledges Frangos’s right to express his opinion, but emphasizes that the same right belongs to those who feel proud of the Greek presence in Cyprus.
