“A Phenomenon Only Slightly Strange” Reading & Accompanying Video Screenings at Thkio Ppalies

The exhibition “A Phenomenon Only Slightly Strange” at Thkio Ppalies in Nicosia explores the phenomenon of UFOs in relation to Ireland and Cyprus. The work investigates how UFOs are perceived in peripheral and post-colonial states, arguing that they do not offer answers but challenge pre-existing beliefs. On January 7th, there will be a reading of the text “A Phenomenon Only Slightly Strange” by Cóilín, followed by screenings of the films “Looking for Freedom?” and “Forty-five Seconds.” The project combines images, videos, and texts, using the theme of UFOs to examine issues of faith, colonial legacies, and power. Cóilín’s research began in Limassol in 2021, where he discovered historical reports of UFO sightings in Ireland and Cyprus, which were later found to relate to secret British military aircraft. The exhibition presents a combination of authentic and constructed archival material, approaching the UFO as a thematic lens for exploring complex ideas. The exhibition will be open from January 7th to 9th, with opening hours from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The event aims to provoke thought about the perception of the unknown and the impact of history and power on its interpretation.
