Accident at Electricity Authority of Cyprus Station - Two Injured

An accident occurred on Thursday at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) station in Vasiliko, resulting in injuries to two individuals. Initially, the Fire Service reported an explosion in the compressed air fire suppression system, but later clarified that it was a violent discharge of inert gas used for firefighting. The incident occurred during maintenance work, and the Larnaca Fire Stations responded. The two injured, employees of a private company performing automatic fire extinguisher cylinder replacements, were handed over to Limassol Hospital for medical evaluation. The Cyprus Police classify the incident as a workplace accident and are investigating the circumstances. According to the Police, the accident was caused by a small material loss during the cylinder replacement and was not an explosion, but a loss of compressed material. One of the injured remained in the hospital for precautionary monitoring, but his condition is not considered serious. No material damage was caused by the incident. The Department of Labour Inspection is investigating the incident.
