Additional 20 Witnesses in Case of German Estate Agent, Main Trial Begins

The Criminal Court of Nicosia decided to add 20 additional witnesses to the Prosecution's witness list in the case of the German estate agent accused of advertising and exploiting Greek Cypriot land in the occupied territories. The total number of witnesses now amounts to 44. The proceedings have returned to the examination of the first witness, investigator Dimitra Stavrou, regarding the defendant's investigative statement to the Police. The defense had raised an objection to the addition of the new witnesses, but the court dismissed it. The President of the Criminal Court, Nikolaos Georgiadis, emphasized that the addition of witnesses does not affect the fair trial and does not violate the rights of the defendant. He pointed out that the Prosecution has the right to use evidence that emerged after the referral, provided it informs the defense in a timely manner. The court also rejected the view that the continuation of the investigation is linked to Article 11.6 of the Constitution, noting that the investigation may also concern evidence that could exonerate the defendant. The process also involves the examination of material that had been delivered to the defense by the German authorities.
