Aemilianides: Only the Attorney General Can Request Lifting of MP Immunity

Legal expert Achilleas Aemilianides stated that only the Attorney General has the authority to request the lifting of parliamentary immunity from the Supreme Constitutional Court. Since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, only four such cases have been recorded, involving MPs Levkios Rodosthenous, Giorgos Georgiou, Feidias Sarikas, and Andreas Themistocleous. Cypriot courts have jurisdiction to examine cases committed abroad, according to the Penal Code. Imposing suspension on an MP is a sensitive issue, as prolonged accusation can affect the performance of their duties. Delaying the completion of the process could lead to the loss of the MP's term, jeopardizing the will of the voters and adding political dimensions to the case.
