AKEL Expels Eirini Charalambidou from Parliamentary Group

The political office of AKEL announced that MP Eirini Charalambidou will no longer be a member of the party's parliamentary group, following the completion of discussions regarding the continuation of their cooperation. This decision comes after Ms. Charalambidou's refusal to accept AKEL's proposal to lead an Observatory for collusion and corruption, as well as the absence of any counter-proposal. AKEL criticizes Ms. Charalambidou for her unethical stance, pointing out that she leaves open the possibility of running in the upcoming parliamentary elections with another party. The announcement emphasizes that this attitude makes continued cooperation impossible, as the MP appears to be in opposition to the party's choices. AKEL states that it has a limit of three (now two after the 2023 congress) terms for its MPs, a practice followed by other parties to ensure renewal and the presence of their political core in Parliament. Ms. Charalambidou has completed the maximum number of terms, but AKEL tried to find a solution for the continuation of their cooperation. The party demands the return of the seat to AKEL, emphasizing that political ethics and deontology require it.
