AKEL General Secretary's Open Letter to President: Confront Corruption or Align With It?

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, addressed an open letter to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, regarding the scandal surrounding the controversial video and the government's handling of the situation. Mr. Stefanou strongly criticizes the President's stance, arguing that it can be interpreted as a lack of understanding of the seriousness of the issue or as tolerance of unacceptable practices. He accuses the government of attempting a cover-up, stating that the claim of “foreign interference” has been used in the past, such as in the “golden passports” scandal, without being convincing. He points out that this cover-up stance harms the reputation of Cyprus and the Presidency. Mr. Stefanou calls on the President to make clear decisions against corruption, such as dismissing the Director of his Office, abolishing the Fund chaired by his wife, and publishing the donors to it. He emphasizes that history will judge the President's choices: confrontation with corruption or alignment with it.
