AKEL: Intervention in Venezuela Threatens International Law

AKEL strongly condemns the US intervention in Venezuela, characterizing it as a violation of international law and the creation of a dangerous precedent. The party emphasizes that this intervention undermines the fundamental principles of sovereignty and non-interference, particularly endangering smaller states such as Cyprus. AKEL's statement notes that the reasons invoked by Donald Trump for the intervention are unconvincing, as Trump himself has admitted to seeking control of Venezuela's oil reserves. AKEL expresses concern over the increasing marginalization of international law and the dominance of the law of the strong. It warns that this practice threatens small states fighting for their rights. The party calls on the international community to act immediately and collectively to defend the principles governing the international system of security and cooperation. The announcement by AKEL stresses the importance of respecting the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of states, as well as non-interference in their internal affairs. It believes that these principles form the foundation of international institutions and must be respected by all. Finally, AKEL calls on the Cypriot people to participate in the protest organized by the Pan-Cypriot Peace Council outside the US Embassy to defend peace and the right of peoples to decide their future without threats and interference.
