Archaeological Park of Larnaca Faces Delays Due to Expropriation Issues

The creation of the Larnaca Archaeological Park, an ambitious project to unify the archaeological sites of ancient Kition, is significantly delayed. Although it was supposed to begin in 2024, the architectural competition has not even been announced. The delays are mainly due to pending land expropriations. While the owners of two plots initially filed objections, these were dismissed by the Council of Ministers, the owners continue to obstruct the expropriations and have appealed to the Administrative Court. The Deputy Ministry of Culture has exhausted its options to expedite the expropriations and has asked ETAP Larnaca and local authorities to exert their influence on the owners. However, the lack of progress jeopardizes the showcasing of important archaeological treasures of Larnaca, especially in light of its candidacy for the European Capital of Culture in 2030. Furthermore, an ongoing excavation on a demolished house is mentioned, which has revealed significant findings, but the continuation of the work remains uncertain due to bureaucratic obstacles and lack of resources.
