Archaeologists Discover Evidence of Roman Industrial Hub in England

Archaeologists have made a significant discovery in England, identifying evidence of a vast, previously unknown Roman industrial hub near Sunderland. The find includes over 800 whetstones, stone rods used for sharpening tools and weapons, with estimates suggesting hundreds or even thousands more remain buried. This is the largest known collection of whetstones in north-western Europe and indicates that the area of Offerton was a production centre for whetstones, involving sandstone quarrying and processing into rods. The geographical location of Offerton made it an ideal trading point, with the ability to transport goods by river and sea.
