Asylum: New Rules for Safe Third Countries and Countries of Origin

Published February 10, 2026, 14:38

The European Parliament has approved new rules on asylum, aiming for faster processing of applications and stricter migration management. The creation of a Union list of 'safe countries of origin' (Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, Tunisia) has been approved, where asylum applications from nationals of these countries will be examined through a fast-track procedure, unless a risk of persecution is demonstrated. Candidate countries for EU membership will also be considered safe, except in special cases. In addition, new rules for 'safe third countries' have been approved, allowing member states to reject asylum applications if the applicant has a connection to a third country. Some provisions can be applied immediately, before the full entry into force of the legislation in June 2026.
