Athens FIR Blackout: No Impact on Flight Safety

A prolonged blackout affecting almost all radio frequencies of the Athens FIR did not cause any problems for flight safety, according to Chrysanthos Chrysanthou, President of the Mediterranean Flight Safety Foundation (FSF-MED). The cause of the blackout appears to be equipment upgrade issues, not external interference. Due to the malfunction, the number of flights passing through Cypriot airspace increased as pilots preferred to avoid Greek airspace. Cypriot authorities were able to effectively manage these additional flights, ensuring safety. Mr. Chrysanthou emphasized that there was no confirmation of external intervention, as such incidents usually target specific frequencies. He also highlighted the need for immediate resolution of issues arising between air traffic controllers and politicians, as these can affect the smooth operation of the system. The Cypriot services were fully prepared and managed all flights avoiding Greek airspace, regardless of their origin (Turkey or southern directions). The transfer of data from Greek airspace to other countries was not affected, as Cyprus was informed in advance of flights entering its airspace. Overall, the situation was handled effectively, without any incident endangering flight safety. The prompt management by the Cypriot authorities and the lack of external interference contributed to the smooth development of events.
