Australia: Severe Heatwave Hits the Country - Bushfires Triggered

A severe heatwave is impacting southern Australia, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some cities. Authorities have issued health warnings, while power grids are overloaded and bushfires have broken out. Meteorologists warn that the weather conditions are the worst since 2019-2020, when the so-called 'Black Summer' destroyed vast areas and claimed 33 lives. Extreme heat warnings have been issued for the states of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania, with a heightened fire risk in Victoria and South Australia. Temperatures have reached 45 degrees Celsius in some areas, with the warm air mass extending from Western Australia. Authorities in Victoria have urged residents to stay home and stay hydrated, as temperatures reached 44 degrees Celsius in Melbourne. Firefighters are battling multiple fires across the state, with conditions expected to worsen. In Sydney, the temperature reached 31 degrees Celsius, while in Adelaide it hit 43. Some public spaces, such as libraries, have extended their hours to provide refuge from the heat, while others, such as Monarto Safari Park, have been forced to close. More than 2,000 homes in Adelaide are without power.
