Optimistic Outlook for Cyprus Dam Inflows - 'Better Position Than Last Year'

The situation of dams in Cyprus is showing improvement compared to last year, with increased water inflows. The Water Development Department (WDD) expects further increases in inflows due to predicted rainfall until the end of the month. The last three days have recorded 2 million cubic meters of water, an increase compared to previous days. Marios Chatzikostis, the first technical engineer of the WDD, estimates that inflows will exceed last year's low reserves, as the initial goal seemed difficult due to limited inflows in October, November, and December. The current dam capacity is 21.8% (63.3 million cubic meters), while last year at the same time it was 25.1% (72.9 million). The situation in the province of Nicosia is particularly positive, while the Tamassos, Klirou, and Solia enrichment dams show increased water levels. Also, the Vyzakia, Xyliatos, and Kalopanagiotis dams have significantly increased inflows compared to last year. In Polis Chrysochous, the dams also show an improved picture, with Argaka and Pomos already overflowing and Agia Marina approaching overflow. Forecasts for further rainfall reinforce optimism for managing the hydrological year and ensuring sufficient water for domestic and irrigation purposes.
