Behind the Scenes of Maduro's Arrest: The Vatican Knew, Putin Offered Asylum

Prior to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, there were extensive diplomatic efforts to avoid military intervention and offer him asylum. According to government documents obtained by the Washington Post, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, on behalf of the Vatican, contacted US Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Bertsch to clarify US plans and seek an exit for Maduro. Russia was prepared to offer Maduro asylum, with Vladimir Putin guaranteeing his safety, while the possibility of allowing him to retain his funds was also discussed. However, these efforts failed, and Maduro was arrested by US Special Forces, resulting in the deaths of approximately 75 people. The Vatican expressed regret over the leak of confidential conversations.
