Belgium: 12-Year-Old Suspected of Jihadist Propaganda

The number of minors involved in terrorism cases linked to jihadist ideology is increasing in Belgium. According to the annual report of the State Security, a 12-year-old child is suspected of jihadist propaganda. Belgium, which this year marks 10 years since the Brussels jihadist attacks, faces a continuing threat from this ideology, which continues to inspire attack plans, although less organized than in the past. State Security reports that this threat accounts for 80% of the cases recorded. The suspects involved in the propaganda of Islamic State or Al-Qaeda are getting younger, with an average age of 22, and the youngest person being only 12 years old. State Security emphasizes that it is particularly careful in cases involving minors and cooperates with the competent authorities, such as the juvenile prosecutor's office. Although plans for violent acts concern an increasing number of minors, State Security notes that these are usually less developed and difficult to implement. Authorities fear isolated actions or actions by small groups operating online.
