Blackout at Athens FIR Not Due to Malicious Attack, Says Cybersecurity Authority Chief

The head of the National Cybersecurity Authority, Michalis Bletsas, stated that the blackout at the Athens FIR was not due to malicious activity by third parties, but to a widespread failure of the telecommunications system. According to Mr. Bletsas, the authorities know what happened, but not yet the exact mechanism that led to the incident. The problem was caused by the remote controls of transmitters from the broadcasting centers, which remained open, causing “denial of service” and frequency congestion. Mr. Bletsas emphasized that there was no interference and that the investigation is ongoing to prevent similar incidents in the future. The risk to flight safety was ruled out, as there was no safety issue, only inconvenience to passengers due to flight cancellations. The use of the backup system was impossible due to the occupation of the spectrum by the transmitters. The head of the National Cybersecurity Authority clarified that there is no evidence of sabotage or foreign involvement, although the possibility of human technical error is not excluded. He stressed that such incidents are not unique to Greece, as similar failures have occurred in other FIRs internationally.
