Blind Individuals Lose Monthly Allowance, Protest Planned

The Pan-Cypriot Organization of the Blind is protesting the abolition of the monthly allowance of €382 for blind individuals, which has been provided since 1996. The examination of applications for the allowance has been suspended since September, resulting in 15 blind individuals already being deprived of the benefit. The organization accuses the government of illegal actions and the deprivation of human rights, arguing that the abolition of the allowance aims to save 8 million euros for other subsidies. Furthermore, it is reported that blind individuals are also losing access to a special household electricity rate, while the government did not consult them before making the decision. The organization is announcing a protest demonstration outside the Presidential Palace.
