British Bases: “Issue of Political Decision to Renegotiate the Status”

Renegotiating the status of the British Bases in Cyprus requires delicate political and legal maneuvering, according to Associate Professor of International Law Aristotelis Constantinis. The decision to put it on the agenda primarily depends on political decisions. Various governments have at times left open the possibility of renegotiation, linking it to the prospect of a Cyprus settlement. Potential changes could include the return of land, changes to the terms of use, or enhanced cooperation. The termination of the Establishment Treaty is a complex legal issue. The issue of security has again highlighted the discussion, while the historical connection with the Cyprus issue has been a key factor in not raising it until today.
