Bulgaria: Heading for Early Elections After New Government Failure

Bulgaria is heading towards early elections after the second-largest political formation in parliament, PP-DB, rejected the mandate to form a new government given by the President. This follows the previous refusal of GERB-SDS, the largest party, to form a government. The current coalition government, led by Prime Minister Rosen Zelyaskov, resigned last month following weeks of protests against corruption and disagreements over the budget. The refusal to form a government by the two largest parties is leading to the announcement of the eighth elections in Bulgaria in just four years. Despite the political uncertainty, Bulgaria joined the Eurozone on January 1st as scheduled. However, political stability is considered essential for absorbing European funds, encouraging foreign investment, and combating corruption. The GERB-SDS coalition won the October elections, but it took months of negotiations to take power, relying on the support of other parties in parliament.
