Cambodia Accused of Firing at Thai Territory

Published January 6, 2026, 10:25

The Thai army accused Cambodia of violating the ceasefire, firing mortar shells at the Chong Bok area. One Thai soldier was injured by shrapnel. Cambodia later assured Thailand that the firing was the result of an accident, not a deliberate act. The incident follows three weeks of fighting that resulted in 47 deaths and the displacement of approximately one million people. Both countries had committed to freezing military positions and cooperating on mine removal. The dispute over the border between Thailand and Cambodia has lasted for decades and has led to previous conflicts.
