Cardiovascular Diseases: Leading Cause of Death in Cyprus Despite Decreasing Rates

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Cyprus, although mortality rates have decreased from around 40% to 24%. This was announced by the Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalambides, in his speech at the symposium on cardiovascular health co-organized by the Medical School of the European University of Cyprus, the Cyprus Atherosclerosis Society and the Office of the Commissioner for Citizens. The Minister stressed that a significant proportion of deaths from cardiovascular disease could be avoided through early prevention and the adoption of healthy lifestyles, such as quitting smoking, healthy eating and regular exercise. He also referred to the new European Union (EU) plan 'Safe Hearts Plan', which aims to strengthen the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The Ministry of Health is investing in strengthening primary and secondary prevention, upgrading the health system with modern tools, and supporting research and innovation. The National Strategy for the Management of Cardiovascular Diseases has already been prepared and approved, focusing on prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and research. This symposium is an important initiative to raise public awareness about cardiovascular health and promote prevention and early diagnosis.
