Cautious Optimism for the Cyprus Issue

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, expressed cautious but determined optimism regarding the Cyprus issue, emphasizing the need for substantial initiatives and clear political positions by 2026, aiming to restart negotiations from where they left off in Crans Montana in 2017. This optimism, also voiced by the UN Secretary-General, must be supported by concrete actions and proposals. Mr. Stefanou reiterated that AKEL's pursuit is a solution that will end the Turkish occupation and reunite Cyprus, creating a common future of peace, security, and cooperation for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Reunification is considered the vindication of the Cypriot people. The importance of resuming negotiations from Crans Montana was highlighted, as significant convergences had been achieved there. Stagnation and inaction, according to Mr. Stefanou, only serve to perpetuate the occupation and the existing situation. Finally, the General Secretary of AKEL referred to the need to defend international law and UN resolutions, as well as to avoid the law of the jungle, emphasizing that the degradation of the UN's role and the dominance of the strong increase instability and conflict, especially for small and vulnerable countries like Cyprus.
