Central Bank Governor Emphasizes Productivity

The Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Christodoulos Patsalides, emphasized the importance of productivity as the core of every reform, as productivity gains enhance development potential. Speaking at a conference, he pointed out that the ECB's intervention to curb inflation, through interest rate hikes, came at a cost, increasing debt and reducing fiscal space. Mr. Patsalides warned that high debt and strained public finances could lead to a re-pricing of state risks and create pressure on bond markets. Although European economies have shown resilience, growth remains subdued and structural challenges persist. The Governor of the CBC argued that governments should prioritize investments that enhance productivity and support potential output. He pointed out that the new EU fiscal rules provide the possibility of extending the period of fiscal adjustment, provided they commit to investments and reforms that enhance productivity. Finally, Mr. Patsalides called for a collective approach to addressing Europe's structural obstacles to growth and promoting initiatives that will unlock development potential, emphasizing that increased spending on infrastructure and education can lead to long-term development benefits.
