Central Prisons: 90 Mobile Phones Confiscated in Three Months

90 mobile phones have been confiscated in the Central Prisons over a three-month period since the system for detecting them became operational. This was reported by the Deputy Director of the Prisons, Maria Siali, to the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, in the presence of the Minister of Justice. While the mobile phone detection system is functioning, the signal jamming system is still pending, however the Minister of Justice committed to resolving the issue within the next two months. The discussion in the Committee focused on the conditions of detention in the Central Prisons and the protection of the human rights of prisoners. The confiscation of mobile phones is part of efforts to improve security and compliance with the rules within the prisons.
