Chaos with Illegal AirBnBs in Cyprus – Why Prices Have Risen

Cyprus is experiencing an increase in illegal short-term rental properties, such as AirBnBs, over the past two years, with the number approaching 10,000. The Association of Self-Catering Accommodation is concerned about this phenomenon, as the lack of adequate controls allows many owners to operate illegally. Existing legislation hinders inspections, as officials from the Deputy Ministry of Tourism are not permitted to enter private homes without a warrant. At the same time, there is an increase in the prices of self-catering accommodation, due to the rising cost of operation, such as electricity and cleaning services. However, according to the General Secretary of the Association, these accommodations remain the most affordable option for tourists, especially Cypriot citizens. The Association is calling for the strengthening of the powers of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, in order to carry out more effective inspections and reduce the phenomenon of illegal activity. The increase in illegal accommodations creates unfair competition for legal accommodations and can negatively affect the quality of tourism services. This situation requires immediate action from the competent authorities, with the aim of ensuring legality and quality in the field of short-term rentals, as well as protecting the rights of both owners and tourists.
