“Children of Femicide Are Not Collateral Damage” – Daughter of Murdered Woman Speaks at European Parliament

Twenty-year-old Danai Jessica (Stefania), daughter of Enkeleida who was murdered in Menidi by her ex-husband with 17 stab wounds, spoke at the European Parliament about her tragedy and the need to protect the children of femicide victims. Enkeleida had repeatedly reported threats to the police and the judiciary, but did not receive adequate protection. Danai Jessica emphasized that her mother was never informed about the hearing of her case and that the protection system has shortcomings, as reports are not accompanied by risk assessment and immediate protection. She called for mandatory victim information, unified European risk assessment protocols, and financial support for the children of victims of gender-based violence, stressing that these children are not merely collateral damage, but victims themselves. The event at the European Parliament, titled “Femicides: 8+1 Stories,” was organized by MEP Kostas Arvanitis and the non-profit organization “Become Human.” Danai Jessica mentioned that her mother was left to die for hours with a knife in her stomach, while she took custody of her younger brother after the murder. Danai Jessica’s speech shed light on the successive failures of the system to protect Enkeleida, despite her repeated reports. Authorities, in some cases, reassured her, downplaying the seriousness of the situation and leaving the perpetrator free. The story of Enkeleida is another tragic example of femicide that highlights the urgent need for substantial change in addressing gender-based violence and protecting women at risk.
