China Opens World's Longest Road Tunnel at a Cost of Over €5 Billion

China has opened a new mega-infrastructure project, the Tianshan-Shengli road tunnel, the world’s longest at 22.13 kilometers, in the Xinjiang region. The project, costing over €5 billion, dramatically reduces travel times in a mountainous area, from three hours to just 20 minutes. Construction began in 2020 and utilized modern technologies and innovative methods. The tunnel consists of two parallel tubes, each with two lanes of traffic, and is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Xinjiang and Central Asia. It also achieved two world records: the longest road tunnel and the deepest vertical shaft in a road tunnel. However, Finland’s water pipeline (over 120 kilometers) remains the largest tunnel project globally.
