China's Tree-Planting Project to Combat Desertification Dries Up Water Resources

China has planted billions of trees as part of the “Great Green Wall” to halt the expansion of the Gobi Desert and reduce carbon dioxide. Initially, the results appeared encouraging, with a slowdown in desertification. However, scientific analyses revealed that the fast-growing, non-native tree species planted are absorbing vast amounts of water from the soil and groundwater, competing with agricultural needs and human consumption. This has led to a decrease in available freshwater in some areas and a shift in rainfall patterns. In contrast, the “Great Green Wall of Africa” follows a different approach, emphasizing restoration with native species and the involvement of local communities.
