Chocolate Wrapper Solves Archaeological Mystery at Scotland's First Skatepark

An excavation at the site of Scotland's first skatepark, in Kelvingrove Park, has revealed a chocolate wrapper that helped determine the date the park ceased operations. The skatepark, which opened in 1978 and hosted significant events, was abandoned in the early 1980s due to declining interest and concerns about cost and safety. Despite being known to have closed during that period, the exact date remained unknown. The excavation, carried out by the University of Glasgow with the help of volunteers and students, also uncovered other interesting finds, such as the guide lines for skaters. This discovery is particularly significant for skateboarding enthusiasts, as the 1970s park represents a different era for the sport. The research will be featured in an episode of the BBC's 'Digging For Britain' show.
