Christodoulides: Cyprus Proved EU's Capability for Autonomy

President Christodoulides, speaking at the European Policy Centre in Brussels, emphasized that Cyprus has demonstrated the European Union's ability for autonomy by addressing a crisis on its own with the help of allies. He stressed that Cyprus is not involved in the conflict in the region but faced an isolated incident with a drone at British bases. President Christodoulides expressed his gratitude for the immediate response from countries such as Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands, which provided assistance to strengthen Cyprus's defense and security. He described this solidarity as historic and deeply moving for Cypriots. He noted that Cyprus, in effect, applied Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty, which provides for mutual assistance in the event of armed aggression, without having to formally activate it. He believes this could be a significant step towards strengthening European autonomy. President Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus's humanitarian role as a safe haven and emphasized that the country always seeks to be part of the solution, not the problem. He also referred to the informal European Council to be hosted in Cyprus, aiming to promote European autonomy.
