Christodoulides: We are Proceeding with Pension Reform

President Nikos Christodoulides referred to the promotion of pension reform and the strengthening of low-income pensioners during the inauguration of the new Municipal Elderly Care Center “Evanthia Pieridou” in Larnaca. He emphasized the importance of improving the quality of life of the elderly through a people-centered approach. President Christodoulides mentioned the adoption of the First National Strategy and Action Plan for Active Aging, which includes 45 specific policies to enhance the health, dignity, social participation, and integration of the elderly. The coordination of the Strategy is carried out by the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, with the participation of nine Ministries and Deputy Ministries. In addition, he referred to the Scheme for Subsidizing Accommodation and Care in Elderly Care Homes, which has increased the provision to 1,300 euros from 745 euros, while also introducing binding quality criteria for the services offered. Today, 85% of elderly care homes in the country are contracted with the scheme. President Christodoulides also mentioned the “Red Button” Program for immediate communication and assistance to elderly people living alone, the funding of home care and support programs, as well as the inclusion of low-income pensioners in the special electricity tariff and the increase in their allowances, including the Easter allowance. All these measures aim at the immediate financial support of the elderly and the improvement of their daily lives.
