Christos Clerides: Risk of Institutional Derailment in the Election of a Cypriot Judge to the ECHR – Political Interference, Victimization and Misrepresentation of Academic Title

Lawyer Dr. Christos Clerides, representing Senior Provincial Judge X. Xenophon and European Prosecutor K. Loizou, accuses senior officials of the Council of Europe of a possible institutional derailment in the process of electing the Cypriot judge to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The accusations concern political interference, victimization of a judicial officer, and the possible misrepresentation of an academic title by a candidate. Specifically, Dr. Clerides claims that there is an attempt to promote a candidate who is alleged to have declared expertise in human rights that is not demonstrated by her degree. He also denounces the dominance of the executive branch and political figures in the process, as well as the withdrawal of a Supreme Court Judge's candidacy due to political pressure. Dr. Clerides also reports arbitrary intervention by the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the curricula vitae of candidates, creating conditions of unequal treatment. He concludes by calling on the leadership of the Council of Europe to suspend the process until the allegations are fully investigated, in order to safeguard the reputation of the ECHR. These accusations raise serious questions about the transparency and integrity of the process of electing the Cypriot judge to the ECHR and highlight the need for an independent investigation of the claims.
