Colombia: Venezuelans Celebrate the 'Liberation' of Their Country

Following the arrest of Nicolás Maduro by the United States, Venezuelans in Colombia took to the streets to celebrate. The gatherings, which took place in the city of Cúcuta, were characterized by dancing, music, and slogans in favor of Venezuela's freedom. The Venezuelans celebrating expressed hope that Maduro's arrest would lead to change and progress in their country. Many spoke of liberation from a dictatorship and the opportunity to return to their homeland and rebuild their lives. A 23-year-old waiter, who has lived in Colombia for seven years, described the moment as a “step towards the light” and the end of a long period of pain and loss. An elderly man expressed hope for the reunification of families and the return of Venezuelans to their homeland. A political exile emphasized that Maduro's arrest is only the beginning and that Venezuela still has a long way to go. She called on the international community to support Venezuelans and recognize the truth about what happened in their country.
