Concerns Raised Over Turkey's Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant

Concerns are being raised about the upcoming operation of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey, expected in 2026. The president of the parliamentary environment committee, Charalambos Theopemptou, expressed serious concerns regarding the ability to cool radioactive materials, given the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the possibility of leaks and waste management. He also points out the lack of specialized personnel in Turkey to operate the plant and the need to consider the circulation of waters around Cyprus, as well as the use of seawater for desalination. Mr. Theopemptou called on the government to conduct a risk analysis and consider the possibility of a radioactive leak, emphasizing that Turkey often keeps mistakes and leaks in nuclear facilities secret.
