Consumers Open to Using the Digital Euro

A recent survey by the European Central Bank (ECB) shows that consumers are largely open to using the digital euro. The survey reports that the introduction of the digital euro is expected to lead to only a small redistribution of liquidity away from bank deposits. The ECB and other central banks are considering plans to introduce digital currencies, in response to the increase in digital payments, geopolitical developments, and the rise of fintech. The goal is to avoid destabilizing the financial system, which could be caused by a massive transfer of funds to central bank digital currencies. For this reason, the plan for the digital euro includes safeguards to prevent disintermediation in the financial sector. Effective communication is considered critical for informing consumers and encouraging the adoption of the new digital currency. The ECB survey shows that consumer awareness of the digital euro has increased significantly since 2021, with approximately 45% of respondents stating that they are likely to use it in their daily lives. The willingness to adopt is higher for online and in-person retail payments, as well as among younger, higher-income, and more educated consumers.
