Controversy Resurfaces Around First Lady's Fund

DISY is pushing for a new legislative proposal to disclose the donors of the First Lady's independent Social Support Fund, following revelations from a recent video implicating the Presidential Palace in suspicious funding for electoral purposes. The operation of the Fund has raised concerns about potential use for vote-buying and favoritism, with DISY and AKEL MPs expressing reservations since 2024. The lack of transparency, according to the Audit Office, creates reasonable suspicion of quid pro quo, given the President's position as the spouse of the Fund's President. Although the Parliament had passed a law for the disclosure of donors in 2024, President Christodoulides refused to sign it and appealed to the Supreme Constitutional Court, citing a violation of the separation of powers. AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou accused the President of covering up and undermining the institution of the Presidency.
