The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, stated during the inauguration ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency in the EU Council that the EU cannot accept violations of international law anywhere in the world, specifically mentioning Cyprus, Latin America, Greenland, Ukraine, and Gaza. He emphasized the importance of the Cypriot Presidency in continuing support for Ukraine and promoting European integration. Mr. Costa expressed his confidence that under the leadership of President Christodoulides, the EU will become more secure, prosperous, active, and united. Praising the motto of the Cypriot Presidency, “A Sovereign Union. Open to the World,” he highlighted Cyprus’s unique geographical location and its ability to build bridges between different regions. Antonio Costa acknowledged that Cyprus is taking over the Presidency at a critical time, when the rules-based international order is under attack. He stressed that Cyprus’s history, with occupation and division, has given it a deep understanding of the importance of international law for peace and stability. Specifically referring to Greenland, Mr. Costa assured that the EU stands with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing that no decisions regarding these regions can be made without their consent. He reiterated the EU’s firm commitment to defending international law and multilateralism, describing the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a blatant violation of these principles.
