Cran Montana Bar Fire: At Least 40 Dead, Over 115 Injured

A horrific fire at a bar in Cran Montana, Switzerland, has resulted in the deaths of at least 40 people and injuries to approximately 115. The fire broke out at Le Constellation bar while hundreds of people were celebrating the New Year. According to initial testimonies, the fire started from sparklers held by a person on another's shoulders, causing a widespread blaze and explosion. The President of Switzerland, Guy Parmelin, described the tragedy as “one of the worst the country has experienced.” Authorities are investigating the exact causes of the fire, but the most likely scenario is a general conflagration. A survivor, Laëtitia, 17, described a scene of terror, where she found herself under three or four burning people. The fire spread very quickly, causing panic and difficulty breathing. The first police forces arrived quickly at the scene, but the situation was already out of control. Rescuers faced enormous difficulties due to smoke and the intensity of the fire. The tragedy has caused shock and grief throughout Switzerland and condolences have been expressed by international leaders. The investigation continues to determine the circumstances that led to the fire and to assign responsibility.
