Cypriot-Flagged Ship Stranded in the Strait of Hormuz - "We Are Monitoring Developments", Says Deputy Minister of Shipping

The Cypriot government is closely monitoring the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, where a ship under the Cypriot flag is stranded. Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Hadjimanoili, stated that the cruise sector in Cyprus has not been affected so far, while the potential impact on the supply chain will depend on the duration of the conflict. It is estimated that around 1,000 ships and 20,000 sailors are in the area, with 19 ships under the Cypriot flag operating in the Arabian Gulf. The Deputy Minister stressed that the safety of human life and sailors is the primary concern. There are currently no coordinated proposals for escorting ships, but Cyprus is cooperating with its European partners for diplomatic solutions. The International Maritime Council is holding an emergency meeting to discuss the safety of sailors in the region. Cyprus expresses its solidarity with the countries of the Arabian Gulf for the attacks they have suffered. Regarding delays in the transport of goods, the Deputy Minister estimated that problems may arise if the situation continues, however, Cyprus does not appear to be significantly dependent on these areas. The Deputy General Director of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping stated that measures are being considered to address potential impacts on supply chains, with particular emphasis on the energy sector. The situation is being closely monitored and appropriate measures will be taken depending on developments.
