Cypriot Presidency's Three Priorities: Strengthening European Autonomy and Citizen Engagement

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, outlined the three main priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU during a meeting with a delegation from the European Committee of the Regions. These priorities are bringing European citizens closer to the EU, strengthening European autonomy in areas such as defense, competitiveness, and cohesion, and deepening the EU's relations with the wider Middle East, leveraging Cyprus's geographical position. President Christodoulides highlighted the high level of public support for the EU in Cyprus and referred to the need to address challenges such as housing. The President of the European Committee of the Regions emphasized the role of local and regional authorities in bringing the EU closer to citizens and expressed concerns about increasing centralisation at national and European levels, as well as the need for cohesion and decentralisation in the next EU budget. Close cooperation with the Committee of the Regions is expected during the Cypriot Presidency.
